For centuries, the Jersey Devil has been a part of New Jersey folklore, with two locations vying for the title of its birthplace. 🏠 One is the C.A. Nothnagle Log House, also known as the Braman-Nothnagle Log House, in Swedesboro, New Jersey. 🏠 This historic house is one of the oldest surviving log houses in the United States, built between 1638 and 1643 by Finnish settlers. 🔥

According to popular folklore, this is where Mother Leeds, also known as "Mother Leeds," gave birth to the Jersey Devil. 🎃 Legend has it that she cursed her 13th child, saying it would be the Devil. 👿 During a stormy night, the child transformed into a creature with hooves, a goat's head, bat wings, and a forked tail. 🦇 Talk about a Mason-Dixon moment, baby!

But, there's another location that's widely regarded as the correct birthplace of the Jersey Devil: Leeds Point, a small community in the Pine Barrens. 🌳 According to legend, a woman named Deborah Smith emigrated from England and was married to Mr. Leed. 🏠 When she found herself pregnant for the 13th time, she cried out, "Let this one be a devil!" 🔥 Wow!, sister, You went total Murgatroid!

The story goes that the baby boy transformed into a creature with horns, talons, and leathery wings, killing his mother and terrorizing the crowd. 🎃 Many believe that this is the true birthplace of the Jersey Devil, with thousands of sightings reported in the area since the 1700s. 🔮

"According to popular folklore this is the house where, the Jersey Devil originated with a resident named Jane Leeds, known as “Mother Leeds”. The legend states that Mother Leeds had twelve children &, after finding she was pregnant for the thirteenth time, cursed the child in frustration, crying that the child would be the Devil. During 1735, Mother Leeds was in labor on a stormy night while her friends gathered around her. Born as a normal child, the thirteenth child changed to a creature with hooves, a goat's head, bat wings, & a forked tail.

Growling & screaming, it killed the midwife before flying up the chimney & heading into the pines. In some versions of the tale, Mother Leeds was supposedly a witch & the child's father was the Devil himself & some legends state that there was subsequently an attempt by local clergymen to exorcise the creature from the Pine Barrens, or that the creature proceeded to kill local children.

The house itself is also disputed as Paulsboro is not near the modern day pine barons; however, skeptics point out that the bine barons and the forest contained in it were much larger in the 1700s. Additionally, a home in Atlantic county New Jersey was registered as being occupied by Jane Leeds. In-fact the area is now know as “leeds point”.

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in April 23, 1976 & is still privately owned. The cabin is opened for tours by appointment through the current owners, Harry & Doris Rink, who reside in the adjoining structure"

Space Monsters Magazine is excited to announce an open call for submissions for our inaugural ashcan edition!

This special edition will be printed and distributed to comic shops and other retailers to generate buzz and interest in our revamped magazine, which will be reminiscent of the classic publications of the past, such as Famous Monsters of Filmland, Warren magazines, and House of Hammer.

Tom Skulan from FantaCo and I are working together to bring Space Monsters to the shelves, and we're looking for talented writers and artists to contribute to this exciting project.

For our ashcan edition, we're seeking articles that focus on special makeup FX, both practical and CGI, with a leaning towards practical FX. We're also interested in articles about classic, new, and indie sci-fi and horror films, TV series, games, books, comics, and other related topics.

Each article will be introduced by Grimaldi, the host of Space Monsters, in a style reminiscent of the iconic introductions by The Cryptkeeper, Uncle Creepy, Cousin Eerie, and Vampirella.

In addition to articles, we're also seeking concepts for an 8-page black-and-white comic that will be featured in each issue. We're looking for extreme, exploitation-style sci-fi/horror content that will appeal to fans of the genre.

The ashcan edition will be 32 pages in length, with the 8-page comic taking up a significant portion of the publication. This is an opportunity to establish yourself as a writer or artist and potentially secure ongoing columns or one-off articles in future issues.
